His Holiness Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria began his first official visit to Mount Athos as Patriarch on October 21, strengthening the centuries-old spiritual relationship between the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and the monastic community of the Holy Mountain.

The Patriarch arrived in Karyes, the administrative center of Mount Athos, where he was welcomed by Elder George of Vatopedi, the Protos of the Holy Mountain, and representatives of the Holy Community.

A service of prayer was celebrated at the historic Protaton Church, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God. Patriarch Daniel and the accompanying hierarchs then venerated the revered wonderworking icon of the Theotokos, Axion Estin ("It Is Truly Meet").

Welcoming the Patriarch, Elder George described the visit as an opportunity to renew the historic and spiritual bonds between the Bulgarian Church and Mount Athos. He emphasized the Holy Mountain's enduring witness through generations of monks who have dedicated their lives to prayer, ascetic struggle, and the pursuit of perfection in Christ.

Patriarch Daniel expressed gratitude for the warm reception and spoke of the holiness that permeates Mount Athos through its monasteries, sacred icons, and countless generations of ascetics.

The Patriarch is accompanied by Metropolitan Seraphim of Nevrokop, Metropolitan Gregory of Vratsa, Bishop Gerasim of Melnik, and Bishop Kliment of Leukia, Vicar Bishop to the Metropolitan of the United States, Canada, and Australia, together with clergy of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church.

Metropolitan Apostolos of Miletus, representing the Ecumenical Patriarchate, is also accompanying the delegation.

The visit highlights the enduring place of Mount Athos in Orthodox Christianity, where monastic communities continue their centuries-old ministry of prayer and spiritual intercession for the whole world.
