How to Read the Bible

Before beginning this journey, it is important to remember that the goal is not simply to say that we have finished the Bible. The goal is to know God more deeply and to allow His Word to shape our life.

Fr. Thomas Hopko often encouraged Orthodox Christians to simply read the Scriptures, faithfully and prayerfully. We do not have to understand everything at once. Some passages will speak to us immediately. Others may seem difficult or unfamiliar. That is normal. Read them, continue, and return to them later. Very often one part of Scripture begins to explain another as we grow in the life of the Church.

We read the Bible with Christ at the center. The Old Testament prepares for Him, the Gospels reveal Him, and the Apostles proclaim Him. We also read Scripture within the life of the Church, because the Bible is heard in the Divine Liturgy, prayed in the Psalms, and woven throughout our services, feasts, and prayers.

Before reading, take a moment to pray. Ask God to open your heart and help you understand what is necessary for your salvation. Do not rush. This is not a competition. If you miss a day, do not give up. Continue from where you stopped.

Most importantly, try to live what you read. Scripture calls us to repentance, forgiveness, mercy, prayer, love, and faithfulness. The purpose is not only to know more about God, but to draw closer to Him.

So let us begin simply: read, pray, remain faithful, and keep our eyes on Christ.

One year. The whole Bible. Together in Christ.

Read the Scriptures with the Church

Holy Scripture is not separate from the life of the Church. We hear it in the Divine services, pray its words in the Psalms, receive its teaching through the Fathers, and encounter its fulfillment in Jesus Christ.

Pascha Portal invites readers to make a simple commitment: walk through the whole Bible during one year.

This reading plan is a supplement to the Church's appointed liturgical readings, not a replacement for them. On Sundays, the plan is intentionally lighter so that the appointed Epistle and Gospel, the Divine Liturgy, prayer, and parish life remain at the center of the day.

How the plan works

This plan follows the fuller Old Testament received by the Orthodox Church, so it includes some books and passages many Western Bibles leave out — among them Tobit, Judith, the Wisdom of Solomon, Sirach, the Maccabees, and additional passages within Esther and Daniel. If a book name or chapter number looks unfamiliar at first, that is expected, not a mistake — keep reading, and it will become familiar with time.

The 365-Day Reading Calendar

Key: A dash (—) on Saturday or Sunday means there is no additional reading in that stream. The Church's appointed liturgical readings should still be read.

Book and chapter references only — this reading plan does not include the Scripture text itself. For the Psalms in daily and Lenten prayer, see The Psalter.

A Pastoral Word

Do not be discouraged if you miss a day. The purpose is not to turn Scripture into a burden or a contest. Continue from where you stopped, use the final catch-up day when needed, and keep returning to the Word of God with prayer.

Before reading, a simple prayer may be offered:

O Lord Jesus Christ, open the eyes of my heart, that I may hear Thy word, understand Thy will, and live according to Thy commandments. Amen.

The goal is not merely to say, “I finished the Bible.” The goal is to know Christ more deeply and to allow the Word of God to lead us toward repentance, prayer, communion, and life in His Church.

One year. The whole Bible. Together in Christ.
