A Child's Evening Prayer

Children don't need the full adult prayer rule to begin praying each night — a short, steady evening prayer, said the same way every night, does more over time than something longer said only occasionally.

A simple pattern many Orthodox families use:

Thank you, Lord, for this day. [Here, let the child name one thing they're grateful for.]

Forgive me, Lord, for what I did wrong today. [A moment of quiet — no need to list it aloud.]

Please bless and keep [names of family, friends, anyone the child wants to pray for].

Into your hands, O Lord, I place my soul, as I lie down to sleep.

Standing or kneeling briefly before the family's icon corner while praying — even just for these few lines — begins to connect nighttime prayer with the same physical space used for the rest of the family's prayer life. Making the sign of the cross at the start and the end, even before a child fully understands it, is itself part of the prayer.

A question to ask your priestWhether he recommends a specific short evening prayer text for children at your child's age, and whether it's ever appropriate to let an older child begin adding their own words.
